Bitcasa Sets the Bar Higher

For high-tech giants like Google and Amazon, using top-notch technology for software automation testing to help ensure product quality is routine. But for many startups in growth mode, this aspect of product development is either never considered or simply seen as aspirational.

Although we are a startup, product quality is a top priority at Bitcasa so QA automation is a requirement. For example, automation allows us to test application layers to make sure our APIs are working as designed. There is no other way to test the application layer effectively. If we only test from the UI level, it’s partial testing which is not an option for us.

Our QA Automation Team writes programs that simulate user behavior directly on the API layer. User interfacing software connects to a huge application later that users don’t see. By plugging requests into the APIs, we’re able to mimic user actions without touching the UI. This is a critical step to ensure Bitcasa partners and their customers get a high-quality user experience.

Performance, load and stress testing are part of our automation. Together, they help us to determine the health of our platform builds.

Performance tests:

It’s always a challenge to know precisely how many users simultaneously connect to Bitcasa and call APIs. To solve for this, we’ve created a program that simulates thousands of calls at the same time. The automation software generates thousands of calls coming from the UI to the application layer to measure speed of our traffic when we’re loaded. This helps us discover when the system slows down.

Load tests:

The load test makes sure our system can handle a certain amount of traffic. The number is determined from PRD. But rather than just running those numbers, our QA Automation Team might double or triple that number.

Stress tests:

Where does the system break? How many users can call in before there’s real trouble? The stress test is critical to complete the automation software testing. This is a different approach from the prior tests, so the goals are different and the results of the testing are different.

The success of our partners and the satisfaction level of their customers ultimately drives our business. That’s why we’ve committed to  state-of-the-art automation testing. And also why we hire QA engineers who are multi-skilled and understand all different platforms and productions, including iOS, Windows and mobile products. With our focus on recruiting top-notch engineers and product quality, our partners reap the benefits.

CloudFS helps makes it easy for NVOLV to enable connecting at events

Hasan Tariq has spent the past three years working in brand promotion and events for companies including American Express, Master Card, Audi, Disney, and General Motors. He’s also provided technology for concerts and festivals, and has been responsible for payment processing and mobile apps.

Across all these events, he found that attendees were not networking effectively or navigating big events easily. They were stuck reading program booklets and were networking with the wrong people. On the other side, organizers weren’t able to improve from event to event because they weren’t getting accurate analytics on the success of the event. And sponsors weren’t getting the ROI they were expecting from participating in events.

Tariq resolved to find solutions. He and his team created NVOLV, an app aimed at event organizers, sponsors and attendees that consolidates the social activity at an event. It allows attendees to generate buzz and indirectly become brand ambassadors for the event and its sponsors. Over the course of eight months, Tariq and his team developed the app, which includes mobile apps, an API layer, and an admin portal.

NVOLV encourages attendees to create buzz around an event by posting photos and videos of the event. For larger conferences, Tariq and team provide white-label event apps to preserve event branding. The goal is for users to have full access to their own files from anywhere. The app comes with all the necessary discovery features that are needed at festivals, conferences, and expos, such as schedules, lineups, real-time notifications, and maps.

During development, Tariq discovered that some users didn’t want to keep an event-specific app on their device after event was over. But if users deleted the custom-branded event app, they would lose all their photos from the event. Tariq found a solution with Bitcasa.

Using Bitcasa CloudFS, Tariq and his team were able to provide full access to users’ own files and data at all times through the NVOLV app. Originally, they were using Amazon S3 to store the content and implement their custom user-authenticated layer and storage. Apart from the pitfalls of creating secure spaces for users’ files, creating the app was becoming time consuming.

Bitcasa CloudFS made development easy by providing a file system in the cloud that securely stores all the media files, and which users can access anytime from anywhere. Now they’re developing a web interface with the same user authentication as in the app so users have access to the files across platforms.

Bitcasa CloudFS was the right fit for the developers of NVOLV. Tariq found it secure, structured, and easy to integrate. He and his team have developed an app that can store all the social activity, pictures, and videos simply and securely in the cloud.

NVOLV will soon be available in the App Store. The Android app will also be available shortly.

Video Tips for Your IOS and Android

Interested in the video playback features of your Infinite Drive? Check out these tips to ensure you’re getting the most out of your Bitcasa streaming experience.

  1. If you play music and videos on your iPhone or iPad, you can also enjoy them on the big screen! Simply use AirPlay to stream your music and videos to your AppleTV.

  2. You can now watch your videos in full HD within the Android app – take advantage of your fast connection by opening your videos with the “Stream with” menu option. You’ll now enjoy your video in full HD! Note that Bitcasa Android app typically transcodes your videos (we are working hard to ensure we can transcode each movie type!) to save bandwidth, but if this is not an issue, you can get a better viewing experience in seconds.

  3. If you use the VLC video player, you can increase its network cache timing from 10ms to 1000ms so that you receive a much smoother streaming experience. Simple as that!

  4. By “Favoriting” files you can access a local copy instantly while offline and in full quality. So it no longer matters where you’re viewing your files…and it guarantees the best quality viewing experience. Play your videos and music offline on the bus, train, or plane! When you’re done, just “Remove from Favorites” to remove the local copy and free up space!

We designed Bitcasa in such a way that your computer thinks your files are on a local hard drive, which means any application can access your files. We are making it possible for you to be able to instantly stream any video or music file to your PC or mobile device.

Let us know if you have any questions. Also, watch this video and see for yourself how easy it is to add and stream HD videos.
